Sunday was a rough day for the AFC West. The Raiders were not immune to a rough day on this day. It seemed like both the Raiders offense and the 49ers offense were waterlogged from the weather and just couldn't establish anything on the ground or through the air. It's tough to determine on a day like Sunday whether it was the offenses that were struggling or the defenses that were dominating. The Raiders got off to a good start by sustaining to long drives down inside the 10 yard line, but were unable to put the ball in the end zone. This was the beginning of the end for the Raider's offense. They would only have one more drive the rest of the game, which also resulted in a field goal, the rest of the drives were either three-and-outs or ended in INT's. Here are some things i gleaned from watching the game:
Jason Campbell is a less expensive JaMarcus Russell. Campbell was beyond awful. His numbers were worse that any game JaMarcus ever had. He was only 8-21 for 83 yards with 0 TD and 2 INT for a passer rating of 10.7. That will not get it done on any day under any circumstances. He simply cannot lead this offense. Hurry back Bruce!
The running game is not the same without McFadden. Michael Bush is a nice change of pace runner, but it doesn't look like he can make people miss enough to break some big runs, which raises your YPA. McFadden was able to run on the outside and between the tackles and was also able to hit the hole quicker, thus making yards come easier. In order to be successful consistently, we need to be able to utilize both runners in the same game.
What is a rookie WR doing on the field with the game on the line? Jacoby Ford entered Sunday's game without a reception in his career and barely any use on the field outside of special teams, yet it was Jacoby Ford who was in on the last drive on third and short and the ball bounced off his pads and into the hands of Takeo Spikes, ending the Raider's chance of a comeback. This happened in the Houston game as well when a 4th down pass bounced off Murphy's hands and into the Houston player's hands for a game-ending INT.
The Defense played well enough to win. The 49ers had to punt in this game 8 times and could only manage 40 yards in the first half until the last drive that resulted in a field goal. The offense was just not on the field long enough to give the defense some rest and therefore wore down by the end of the game when the 49ers got their two TD's.
